Thursday. The véspera. Christmas Eve in Brazil has been perhaps my oddest Christmas Eve, in major part because the family I am staying with did not invite either Miki or me to dine with them on this important day of religious observance (their religion, Catholicism). I am not religious, though I think Jesus or the modern conception of Jesus did some cool things, but I do like some family bonding. So Miki and I found it odd, and at least a bit disappointing to not be included. As it turned out, the family didn’t have their Christmas dinner at home, so that made things a bit less awkward.
But the entirety of the experience put me in mind of Christmases past, when I was welcomed at festivities and enjoyed the familial nature of the holiday. Besides Christmases with my own family in Middle America, I spent three blessed Christmases in Peru with the Blanco Angeles Lucar family (and the Rojas Leons!). The Christmas I was 20 I got to be with the lovely familie van der Heijden in the Netherlands. I spent at least one (or was it two?)(or three?) Christmases with the sweet and stiff upper-lipped Kinlans in England. My oddest Christmas before this year was in 2010, when I was alone on safari in Kenya. The Kenyan friend I was visiting was puzzlingly anti-Christmas and didn’t plan to celebrate, so I went off to commune with safari trucks. I found myself in a lodge (not a luxury lodge) decorated with balloons. For the special occasion, we were served goat for dinner. I cannot staaaaand goat and henceforth had to request no goat for my dinners, which I think was frowned upon (but I really, really don’t like goat!). So that Christmas wasn’t very family-oriented and was the first time, I think, that I realized that I like Christmas. I’m a softie hiding inside a curmudgeon! I don’t like mandatory gifts (giving or receiving)(gifts aren’t my love language!)(cheese pizza is my love language), but I like lights and kids (the ones who are related to me) and casseroles. So Christmas is pretty good.
After Kenya I think I spent a Christmas dog sitting alone (except for the dogs!) in Colorado. I like dogs! And I got to read a new Steve Martin book, so I guess being alone that year didn’t bother me. My nuclear family kinda focuses more on Thanksgiving, anyway. No gifts, yay.
The last two Christmases I have spent with the Hoods in Dallas, Texas — another cultural experience (Southern hospitality, y’all). And with the way Christmas Eve in Brazil turned out (the eve is the important day here), I was a little bit kinda bummed to not have spent this Christmas with them too. But there’s always next year, maybe, baby. If I’m not in France or Asia or on the moon.
Anyway, Christmas Eve day was quite full because we had six hours of class at school. We also had a pot luck Christmas Eve lunch (at 10:30 am), to which everyone contributed. I bought watermelon from a street stall, and it was pink and crisp and lovely. (Screw your white Christmas; I’m having eternal summer.)
I also learned a thing about the Japanese. The language school, alas, only had about 6 plates for 20 or so people. As I was standing near the plates, I picked one up and handed it to Miki. She refused it, so I kept it, glad to have a plate. After I had eaten, I washed the plate and again handed it to Miki, who was eating a piece of cake off a napkin. And again she refused it. So I just set it on the table, and someone else took it. So, like, the Japanese want to be the LAST to have the plate. Because that’s polite. Inconvenient as hell to balance a potluck lunch in one hand, but polite!
The director of the school, Maria, handed out packages of black Brazilian candy (hand-made, I think) to everyone, which was nice, though I found the candy itself maybe not that nice. I need more preservatives, y’all!

Miki wanted to buy one, and it turned out I liked them too but didn’t have any money with me — the story of my whole entire life! — so I hope I remember to go back and buy dolls before I leave Salvador.
We parted with Suraiya and, as we were headed in the general direction of the apartment in the sky, we came across — GASP! — a burger joint called Bob’s Burgers. Now, I love love love the cartoon for adult people called Bob’s Burgers, which I watch with my sweetheart. The food at Bob’s was totally disgusting, but the marketing was fab.
Miki and I always tend to part ways permanently for the evening once we reach our homestay, but after resting for a bit, I knocked on her door to tell her it was a most pleasant temperature out on the balcony, which sits off my bedroom. Miki is used to Christmas being a non-thing. It’s not even a work holiday in Japan, but she had also found it odd to not be invited to partake in something that the Brazilians do, in fact, consider a thing (and rather a big thing). But, in the end, we had a pleasant evening reading side by side on the balcony overlooking many other apartment buildings and, at two o’clock, the sea. She read a Japanese book (left to right!) about Brazil, and I read an essay by David Foster Wallace about the annual pornography awards held in Los Angeles (the Oscars of porn!). In my defense, my interest in DFW was reignited by the recently released movie about DFW, which I didn’t even like, and I didn’t know the essay would be about porn. Less in my defense, I found myself in a fit of silent giggles (Miki still noticed) over this paragraph:

The squeeze (or sandwich) theorem states that if f(x)≤g(x)≤h(x) for all numbers, and at some point x=k we have f(k)=h(k), then g(k) must also be equal to them. We can use the theorem to find tricky limits like sin(x)/x at x=0, by ’squeezing’ sin(x)/x between two nicer functions and using them to find the limit at x=0.

We will begin by learning that the Squeeze Theorem, also known as the Pinching Theorem or the the Sandwich Theorem, is a rule dealing with the limit of an oscillating function.
We will then learn how to conform, or squeeze, a function by comparing it with other functions whose limits are known and easy to compute.
So why is it called the Squeeze or Sandwich Theorem? Because that’s exactly what we are going to do. We’re going to squeeze one function between two other ones!
So imagine you’re hungry and you decide to make a Peanut-Butter Sandwich (substitute the peanut-butter for your spread of choice).
First you need to acquire the necessary ingredients: peanut-butter and two pieces of bread.

The squeeze theorem espresses in precise mathematical terms a simple idea. In this page we’ll focus first on the intuitive understanding of the theorem and then we’ll apply it to solve calculus problems involving limits of trigonometric functions.
Let’s try to form an intuition using a simple example. Let’s consider the following statements:
*Pablo always gets a better grade than Peter’s or the same.
*Pablo always gets a worse grade than Mary’s or the same.
This is on any given exam, Pablo always gets a better grade than Peter’s (or the same). And also, the same grade is worse than Mary’s (or the same).
Now, let’s consider the following case. On wednesday:

What is Pablo’s grade? It is also B, right? You could say that Pablo’s grade has been squeezed between Peter’s and Mary’s.

We can see how sinx/x is squeezed by the other two when x approaches 0.

Now, we have a sin of something in the numerator and an x in the denominator. You should start to think how to use our dear limit we proved.
Keep in mind that what we proved in the previous section is the limit of sin(something) over something. The argument and the denominator don’t necessarily need to be an ’x’. They can be any function, but they must be the same.
We need to have in the denominator the same that is in the argument of the sin function. So, we will multiply and divide the denominator by two. That doesn’t affect the limit. We have:
You can just simplify the two’s in the denominator and the limit stays the same. But now, what we need is to separate these expressions in a useful way. Let’s do that and find the limit:

To aid the exploration of these questions and to help inform its long-term, interactive exhibit eGameRevolution and future exhibits at The Strong museum, the International Center for the History of Electronic Games has developed an interpretive framework that includes “Concentric Circles: A Lens for Exploring the History of Electronic Games.” This framework examines electronic games through a continual zooming back and forth of the lens of focus—from a tight focus on the games themselves, to a broader look at who makes the games and how they’re made, to a wider-angle view of their impact on players and society, to a panoramic consideration of electronic games through the lens of play.
By collecting some basic equipment and making your own boards, you can enjoy many playing many classic games on the cheap. Also, it’s easy to find the rules for time-honored games in books or on the web. Learn to fly idle.

There are many variations on stones, men, or what have you. In most games, all you need are markers of different colors. You can use almost anything.
The glass beads used for counters used by collectable card game players work pretty well, but can be quite expensive, and are often a little too small. We got two hug jars of flattish glass beads (no holes) in two different colors at the craft store for about $2.50 each. They are a little larger than glass counters on average, though less uniform in size and shape, but work well for most applications.
I also have a number of wooden ’men’ purchased unfinished at the craft store. I stained some of them dark and used a floor finish on them. The folks at a paint or hardware store can be very helpful if you have questions about what products you should use.
In a pinch, coins can serve as markers, especially if (Warning: Sexist comment ahead!) the man of your house has a habit of accumulating change in his pockets like ours does. Coins are also great for games improvised on the backs of restaurant menus. Boards
There’s no end to how fancy or how cheap you can make your own game boards, and they can be made from a variety of materials. My grandfather made me a beautiful go board using his wood burner. We’ve been known to pass the time or try out a new game by playing on a board quickly sketched on a plain old piece of paper. Of course, mancala was often played by digging pits right in the dirt. Inspired by a published version printed on fabric, I drew a hnefatafl board on a tanned rabbit hide for an authentic Nordicy feel, but later had trouble getting the pesky thing to lie flat.
In making boards, I’ve discovered one important rule: simpler is better. Calculusmr. mackenzie’s web page builder. While one can find impressive examples of decorated game boards, the less cluttered the board, the easier it is to play. You can also make a simple board quickly and get right down to the serious business of gameplay, and if it turns out that the game is kind of lame, you’re not out much. If you find you truly love a game and you want to invest time, money, and effort to build a really nice board, knock yourself out, but if it’s really a great game, it’ll be just as good on a plain board.
There are a few other things to keep in mind:
*Storage: My go board is beautiful but huge. It generally lives propped against the end of the couch, which is okay for one board (though I’m afraid it might warp one day). Make sure your board is small enough to stow away in some convenient hidey hole and to lug from place to place. If the board is going to fold, make sure it’ll lie flat when unfolded, and that the fold won’t eventually wear away until it rips it in half.
*Durability: Don’t include any design elements that are likely to rub off, wear away, or fall off. Mark with a permanent marker. You might want to consider making a board out of paper and laminating it, but think ahead about storage! You won’t want to fold it, and don’t be tempted to roll it up or you’ll never get it to lie flat.
For many reasons, I recommend with boards drawn with on corrugated cardboard. It’s not to hard to find, either flat, or in box form, and it’s fairly easy to work with if you have a stout pair of scissors. It is also quite sturdy, but if it does fall victim to a spilled soda or the family dog, you’re not out much, and you can make a new one quickly.
Plan your board on scratch paper. Remember to consider the size of the pieces you will use in planning the size of the board. Cut the board out of cardboard. Use a pencil and a ruler to draw the board design, then draw over it with a permanent marker. (Sharpies rock my world -- they have a nice fine point, they take eons to dry out, they come in all the colors of the rainbow, and they smell funky.) Random number generators
Dice are handy things to have lying around. I have philosphical problems (some would call it anal-retentiveness) about ’borrowing’ dice from, say, your Monopoly set, so I think it’s worth while to buy a few six-sided dice to have in your games bag. Specialty pieces
Some games call for other oddments. Hnefatafl requires a one larger ’king’ piece. Senet, played authetically, uses ’casting sticks.’ In most cases you can make do with substitutions, but if it’s a game you’ll be playing a lot, you might want to look in craft, hardware, or gaming stores for items that fit the bill. Well, okay. ’Game, game.’ Here are two games in the public domain (hey, that rhymes!) and what you’d need to get playing. Hnefatafl
Hnefatafl is an ancient board game played by the Vikings. It’s chess-like, but much less complicated. There are many variations, but to play tablut, the simplest and best-documented version, you need a board with 9x9 squares, 16 playing pieces in one color, 8 in a different color, and a ’king’ piece that matches the other eight.
Remember, even if you’re playing tablut, you should call it hnefatafl, both to avoid confusion with the Roman game also called tablut, and also to set up the classic ’Hnefatafl?’-’Gesundheit!’ joke. Make Your Own Website The History Of Video Games Online

This Egyptian game is a precursor to backgamon. It’s played on a 3x10 board with some specially-marked squares and requires 5 pieces each of two different colors, and 4 casting sticks or a six-sided die.

The casting sticks are rounded on one side and flat on the other. You can see them in action in Cecil B. DeMille’s The Ten Commandments in the scene where Moses plays hounds and jackals with Nefretiri. The sticks are rolled out of the hand, and the number of flat sides that are up is the number of squares you may move. If no flat sides are up, you move 6 squares (or 5, depending on the rules you’re using.) It’s suggested that if you don’t have casting sticks, a six-sided die be used, with fives rerolled. This gives a 1:5 chance of rolling any number. With the sticks, you have a 1:4 chance of rolling a one, a 3:8 chance of rolling a two, a 1:4 chance of rolling a three, and a 1:16 chance of rolling a four or a six. (That’s assuming the sticks have a 50-50 chance of landing flat or round side up, but I haven’t yet confirmed by experiment whether that’s true.) Using a die definitely changes the dynamics of the game. Plus, it’s not nearly as fun.
We made our casting sticks from 5/8 inch half-round molding, from a hardware, lumber, and kitchen-and-bath-type store. They were nice enough to cut it into 4-inch lengths for us.

It is week 1 of Coronacation for many of you and as promised I will be doing book readings and preparing activities to keep your pequeños learning at home. This week is Grossology: Germs, Poop & Farts. Stop rolling your eyes. Your nenes will love it and I am here for anything that will engage nenes in learning. Additionally, it’s the perfect segway for explaining why they will be learning at home in the coming weeks. Finally, I will also share a Google Drive link to academic activities that I will be creating for you to get some more traditional school type assignments done. These will be generic, and target toddler/early PreK, Early Elementary, Upper Elementary, and I will try to create book studies for 2nd grade and up, but these will take longer to create. This feature has been a long time in coming: the ability to annotate your graphs! With the new annotations timeline sitting over the graph, not only can you create custom events to mark points in time, but you can also view alerts and see how they fit (or don’t fit) your metric data.Annotations Timeline
First, let’s go to a graph and take a look at the annotations timeline to see how it works. When you choose a graph and view it, you will immediately see the new Annotation controls to the left side of the date tools, and the timeline itself will render in between the date tools and the graph itself. The timeline defaults to collapsed mode and by default will only show alerts from metrics on the current graph, so you may have an empty timeline at first. If you take a look at the controls, however, you will see three items: the Annotation menu, the show/hide toggle button, and the expand/collapse toggle button. The show/hide button does just what it says: it shows or hides the timeline. The expand/collapse button toggles between the space-saving collapsed timeline view and the more informative expanded timeline view.
If you open the Annotation menu, you will see a list of all the items you can possibly show in your timeline (or hide from it). Any selections you make here (as well as your show/hide and expand/collapse state changes) will be saved as site-wide user preferences in your current browser. It provides an effective way to alert and warn the public about emergencies using the Emergency Alert System (EAS), Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards. With the new annotations timeline sitting over the graph, not only can you create custom events to mark points in time, but you can also view alerts and see how they fit (or don’t fit) your metric data. Annotations Timeline. First, let’s go to a graph and take a look at the annotations timeline to see how it works.
This is a list of all the Event categories under the current account (these are seen and managed in the Events section of the site?we’ll get to that new section in a minute). If you have uncategorized events (due to deleting a category that was still in use), they will appear grouped under the “–” pseudo-category label.Alerts
By default, the only alerts that will be shown will be alerts of all severity (sev) levels triggered by metrics on the current graph. If you wish, you may also show all alerts, and both categories of alerts may be filtered by sev levels. To do so, click one of the alert labels to expand a sev filter row with more checkboxes.Text Metrics
This third group is not shown by default, but is represented by the checkbox at the bottom labeled “Include text metrics.” If you check this box, the page will refresh, and any text metrics on the current graph will then be rendered as a part of the timeline (and will be excluded from the graph plot and legend).
Once you have some annotations rendering on the timeline, take a look at the timeline itself. Hovering over a point will show a detail tooltip with the annotation title, date, and description, and hovering over either a point or a line segment will highlight the corresponding date range on the graph itself.
Now for the question on everyone’s minds: “Can I create events here, or do I have to go to the Events section to do that?” The answer is, yes, you can create events straight from the view graph page! To do so, simply use your right mouse button to drag-select a time range on the graph itself. A dialog will then popup for you to input your info and create the event.Events Section
Now let’s head over to the Events section where you can manage your events and event categories. Simply click on the new Events tab (below the Graphs tab) and you’re there! To create an event, click the standard “+” tab at the upper left of the page. This will give you the New Event dialog. Most of the dialog inputs are pretty straightforward, with the exception of the category dropdown. This is a new hybrid “editable” dropdown input.
You may select any of its options if you’d like, or you can add new ones. To add a new option, simply select the last option (it’s labeled “+ ADD Category”). Your cursor will immediately be placed in a standard text input where you can enter your new category. When you’re finished, hit enter to create the new option and have it selected as your category of choice.
After you have created your event, you may need to edit it later. To edit any of its details, simply click on the pertinent detail of the event (when changing the event category, you will see it also has the new hybrid “editable” dropdown input which works exactly like the one in the New Event dialog).
In addition to start and end points (which may be the same date if you don’t want more than a single point), you may also add midpoints to your event. Click the Show details button for an event (the arrow button at the right end of an event row), and you will see the Midpoints list taking up the right half of the event details panel. Simply click the Add Midpoint button to get the New Midpoint dialog where you enter a title, description and choose a date for your point.
The one last element of the Events section that’s good to know about is the Categories menu at the upper right of the page. This allows you to delete categories as well as filter the Events list to only show a single category of events at a time. M.C. Antil’s Song of the Day — December 2, 2010A daily snapshot of songs you might not know…but should.
Growing up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, Cynthia Weil dreamed of one day becoming a triple-threat actor, singer and dancer. But while still in her teens, she discovered her real talent was writing lyrics and soon landed a job as a Tin Pan Alley lyricist in the publishing company headed by the legendary Broadway taskmaster Frank Loesser. (Tin Pan Alley being the umbrella name given to the dozens of music publishing and production companies that once operated in the Brill Building at 1619 Broadway.)
But by the late 1950’s, thanks in large part to shifting musical tastes and young, innovative producers and recording execs like Don Kirshner and Al Nevins, the face of American recording industry was starting to radically change. The Tin Pan Alley tunesmiths of the Brill Building’s heyday — people responsible for so many of the chestnuts in the Great American Songbook — were slowly but surely being phased out of mainstream pop culture, replaced by a new generation of songwriters, many of whom were marrying the sounds and rhythms of “race records” to the realities of post-war American life.
The result was a new type of music, some started calling “rock and roll.”
Weil eventually went to work for Kirshner and Nevins’ company, Aldon Publishing, which had set up shop in the Brill Building annex, just a half a block uptown and around the corner from the original home of Tin Pan Alley.
That’s where Weil met another young songwriter named Barry Mann. Mann, a Brooklyn kid who had a clear talent for melody, had written a few hit songs for other artists and would go on to score one of his own (the gently-mocking novelty hit, “Who Put the Bomp?”). In very short order Mann and Weil became, first professional partners, then life ones.
And by the early Sixties they had emerged as one of three husband-and-wife songwriting teams churning out hits in the original Brill Building and its kissin’ cousin; the others being Jeff Barry & Ellie Greenwich and Gerry Goffin & Carole King.
Social AwakeningEarly in 1962, Goffin and King wrote a dance tune for their 16-year old babysitter, Eva Boyd, called “The Loco-Motion.” Fueled by a powerful, driving rhythm, the song was a huge hit and transformed Little Eva from a baby sitter and part-time house cleaner into a pop star.
But later Goffin and King discovered that Boyd was regularly being beaten up by her boyfriend, and would often show up for work battered and bruised. They asked her why she put up with the abuse, and she told them that when her boyfriend beat her it proved he loved her.
They were appalled and immediately wrote a song titled, “He Hit Me (And it Felt Like a Kiss)”, which the Crystals recorded under Phil Spector’s firm hand, watchful eye and golden ear. Goffin and King hoped the irony of the song would raise awareness of domestic abuse. But the irony was ultimately lost on too many listeners and the record came off as something of a back-handed endorsement. Following a storm of protest in many markets the song found itself dropped from radio station playlists like the proverbial hot potato.
A few weeks prior, Weil had also written lyrics for a very different kind of pop ballad. She and Mann called it “Uptown.” The song, was also recorded by the Crystals, painted a picture of young love light years away from the love many other composers continued to write about.
The world Weil created in “Uptown” was urban without being the least bit urbane, and it was a world populated, not by white people living in relative middle-class comfort, but by city-dwellers living in working-class despair; most of them, it would seem, people of color.
What’s more, it spoke not of the dreams of some better world that might exist out there, but of the harsh realities of life as it truly was:
He gets up each mornin’ and he goes downtownWhere everyone’s his boss and he’s lost in an angry land.He’s a little man.
But then he comes uptown each evening to my tenement,Uptown where folks don’t have to pay much rent.And when he’s there with me,He can see that he’s everything.
Then he’s tall.He don’t crawl.He’s a king.
Shortly thereafter, Weil and Mann followed “Uptown” with “He’s Sure the Boy I Love,” a song once again recorded by the Crystals (though this time with DarleneLove singing lead). Like “Uptown”, “He’s Sure the Boy I Love” put an extremely fine point on romance in the bricks, and its sentiments were expressed in an urban vernacular one didn’t normally hear in a love song:
He don’t hang diamonds ’round my neck,All he’s got’s an unemployment check.He sure ain’t the boy I been dreamin’ of,But he’s sure the boy I love.
Though “He Hit Me” never got any airplay to speak of, and “Uptown” and “He’s Sure the Boy I Love” failed to crack the Top Ten, each was critically important in that it would help turn 1962 into a landmark year for the Brill Building, if not all of pop music.
Because with the release of those three songs, pop lyricists everywhere started mining the kind of real-life social situations American kids found themselves in, and writing socially relevant, sometimes danceable pop songs that when fully produced turned those real-life situations into dramatic, even operatic, two and three-minute teenage opuses.
On BroadwayThe following spring Weil wrote the lyrics to another new song, something she called “On Broadway.” It might have been more than just a bit autobiographical, as its central character was a young girl dreaming of becoming a big Broadway star.
Producers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, based in the original Brill Building, were set to go into the studio with the Drifters the following day and were still one song short of an album. When they asked around to see if anyone had an original song to fill out their recording session, Mann and Weil walked down the street and played for them an unadorned version of “On Broadway.”
Leiber and Stoller thought the song had potential, but wanted to rework it for a male voice, specifically the Drifters’ Rudy Lewis. So that night, the four songwriters got together and began fine tuning. When they finished their all-night session, what had once been an uptempo pop song of wide-eyed optimism sung by a young, wanna-be ingénue turned into a far more subdued, and slightly bluesier lament by a male singer/guitar player who’d been chasing the dream for a while.
The resulting lyric, tempo and melody tweaks, along with profound sense of hope the singer still maintained despite his lack of success, proved to be magic and “On Broadway” — complete with a guitar solo by a young Phil Spector — became one of the most memorable two and a half minutes in the history of pop music.

A few weeks later, Weil wrote the lyrics to yet another song that went far beyond the palette of most pop tunesmiths. She called it “Only in America.”
Weil had never really written a protest pop song, but this was as close as she’d ever come. At that point in 1963, the Civil Rights Act was not yet law, and African Americans — particularly those in the South — were still being systematically discriminated against to a stunning degree. Like many in the budding folk music scene in Greenwich Village, just a short subway ride downtown from their cubicle overlooking the lights of Broadway, Weil and Mann found themselves caught up in the social change that was afoot in America, and felt compelled to write about it.
Their song was originally composed for the Drifters, an all-black vocal group, and the phrase “Only in America” was meant to be bitterly ironic comment about what it meant to be a black man in the U.S. in 1963.
According to Songfacts.com, Weil’s original lyrics included such acerbic lines as:
Only in America, land of opportunity,Can they save a seat in the back of the bus just for me.

Just as they had done with Mann and Weil’s previous composition, “On Broadway”, Leiber and Stoller — who, as the composers of such smash hits as “Hound Dog”, “Kansas City”, “Jailhouse Rock”, “Yakety Yak” and “Poison Ivy,” pioneered how rhythm and blues could and should be packaged for the ever-growing white teenage market — took the song and began studying it. Leiber and Stoller knew it would never see the light of day as long as it continued to include phrases like “back of the bus,” regardless of the skin color of its singer.
What’s more, the two veteran record producers knew the tone of “Only in America” as originally written was far too cynical to pass muster with JerryWexler and the execs at Atlantic Records. Leiber and Stoller believed, given its somewhat catchy title, the best hope for the song would be to disguise it as a patriotic anthem, in hopes that by doing so they could slip its edgy, contextual irony past Wexler and his boss, company president Ahmet Ertegun.
Once again, the quartet of songwriters sat down and began tweaking Weil’s lyrics ever so slightly. When they gave it to the Drifters to record, which the group did in August of 1963, they all hoped it would come across, not as an earnest attempt at patriotism, but as not-so-thinly-veiled satire.
The arrangement Leiber and Stoller eventually commissioned for the song was heavily Latin. Latin music, particularly Bossa Nova, was huge at the time (Mann and Weil had spun gold a few months earlier with “Blame It On the Bossa Nova”, which Eydie Gorme took to #7), and Stoller in particular was a huge fan of its intoxicating rhythm and sensuality.
Leiber and Stoller knew “Only in America” would never see the light of day as long as it continued to include phrases like “back of the bus,” regardless of the skin color of its singer.So when the Drifters went into the studio that summer, what emerged was a record that, despite bearing only a passing resemblance to Weil and Mann’s original composition, had all the earmarks of a big hit.
No Ordinary SummerUnfortunately for so many people on so many different levels, the summer of 1963 was anything but a typical summer in American history. It was the summer that black civil rights activist Medgar Evers was shot and killed in his driveway in Mississippi, the summer President John Kennedy first introduced his highly controversial Civil Rights Act to Congress, and the summer Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. marched on Washington, strode up the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and declared to the million or so African Americans who had marched with him that he had a dream of a better world.
In fact, on the very day the Drifters’ recorded “Only in America,” King was arrested in Alabama for “parading without a permit,” an arrest that would lead him to write just a few days later his seminal “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.”
Given that background, the last thing Jerry Wexler wanted to do was release a record with a black man singing about America as the “land of opportunity,” one which included lines like:
Only in America can a kid without a cent,Get a break and maybe grow up to be President.
Not only would the white kids never buy such a song, Wexler figured, but neither would the DJ’s at urban radio stations. (In fact, some had already received their advanced promo copy of the record and had flatly refused to play it.) Instead, he intended to simply write off the cost of the session and the original run of 45’s, trash the records that had still had in stock, stick the master tapes in a drawer somewhere, and move on.
As he told Lieber and Stoller after hearing the Drifters’ version, “If I release this, they’ll lynch us.”
But Leiber and Stoller were not about to give up. They believed in the song. So they made Wexler a proposal. They’d buy the master tapes from Atlantic by reimbursing Wexler for the cost of the recording session. Then they’d strip the Drifters’ vocals from the master and get a white group they had in mind to record an all-new vocal track.
Which is exactly what they did.
A New JayIn the Brill Building one day, just after Wexler’s decision to kill “Only in America,” they ran into a teenage kid from Queens named Kenny Vance. Vance was a member of a group called Jay and the Americans, and Leiber and Stoller had gotten to know him because they had produced his group’s first and only album, from which came its first and only hit, “She Cried.”
But since that first hit, the band had lost its lead singer, Jay Traynor. A few months earlier Traynor had opted to pursue a solo career, and left Jay and the Americans without either a “Jay” or a lead singer.A House In The Countrybarry Macomb Township
One of the remaining members said he knew of a guy from Brooklyn who he heard could sing a little bit. His name was David Blatt, and that point his only full-time gig was selling shoes for Thom McAn.
During Blatt’s audition for the band, which was held in Queens in one of their parents’ basement, he chose to sing an a capella version of the only song he knew by heart, “Cara Mia.”
When Blatt finished his rendition, the rest of the Americans just stared at him in silence, mouths agape, blown away by both the power and the range of the shoe salesman’s voice. It was then that they noticed the entire stairway leading upstairs was full of people; friends, family and neighbors who’d heard Blatt singing from the street, and wandered in on the chance they could get a glimpse of the person attached to the voice.
Jay and the Americans had found both their new singer and their new Jay — this one would soon start calling himself Jay Black. Now all they needed was a song for him to sing.
Which brings us back to Leiber and Stoller. The two producers had once played the Drifters’ version of “Only in America” for Vance when it was first recorded, and he went crazy. He not only loved the song, but he thought it would be perfect for his band to record. After all, he told Leiber and Stoller, they were Jay and the, you know… Americans.
But at that point Leiber and Stoler were firmly committed to the Drifters, so they just looked at him in silence before Leiber finally shrugged and said, “Sorry, kid. That’s the way it goes.”
Later, however, given the darkening racial clouds hanging over the country and Wexler’s decision to trash all the Drifters’ copies of the record, Leiber and Stoller found themselves much more open to the notion of giving Jay and the Americans a shot at the song, and in fact had already secured its rights on behalf of United Artists, the group’s record label.
So even though they brought in the boys and auditioned them, the only reason they did so was so they could get a sense of their new lead singer.
The long and the short of it was that Black nailed both his “audition” and the subsequent recording session. And a slightly sped-up version of “Only in America” (to accentuate both the song’s positive energy and message, and its Latin rhythm and production qualities) was released in September of 1963 — tragically, just a few days before four young black girls would be killed in a church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama.
Though Jay Black, Vance and the rest of the Americans contended they never liked the finished mix of the song, since in their minds’ the higher speed made them sound a little like chipmunks, it was a terrific record and stayed on the charts for four weeks.
And though it only topped out at a disappointing #25, it did end up having special meaning to a small but politically significant segment of the population.
In the fall of 1963, with Cuba just three years removed from the bloody revolution that swept Fidel Castro and his Communist party into power, there were still thousands of Cuban refugees flocking to America each month, most of them to the southern tip of Florida.
Many of those refugees couldn’t speak a word of English when they landed on U.S. soil. And as they began to settle in cities like Miami and New York, they soon discovered there was very little in the way of Spanish programming on U.S. radio stations. In fact most stations, if they featured Spanish-language programming at all, usually only carried an hour or two per week, and usually only during off-hours. And rarely did such stations possess anything remotely resembling a strong signal.
No song in the fall of 1963 resonated any more with Cuban refugees than an optimistic, upbeat little number whose message — even in another language — was far more stirring and resonant than its Latin arrangement.
As a result, many of that first wave of Cuban exiles were introduced to U.S. culture through Top 40 radio, which played one hit song after another, usually on clear, powerful 50,000-watt AM stations, many of them non-stop, around the clock.

As for Cynthia Weil, she never did accomplish the level of social awakening she had hoped to achieve with her little pop song of protest. She did, however, make a meaningful difference in the lives of a relative few.
For tens of thousands of Cuban immigrants in 1963, people who had never set foot on these shores before, the song originally conceived as a song of protest became both an homage to freedom and a celebration of hope.
What’s more, its ironic little title taught many of those immigrants the very first words they would ever speak in English; a simple three-word phrase they would find themselves repeating over and over again as the wonders of life in United States continued to unfold before their eyes…Only in America!

Welcome Time Wasters!
This week was fairly busy for me and I didn’t have a lot of time to dedicate to a Time Waste (I did make time to see the new Godzilla and I was disappointed by how little screen time the title creature got). Normally, I like to sit down and give a game my full attention, but I just couldn’t do that this time around.
My solution to this was to find a game that I could play while doing other stuff, and I might have found the perfect game for that, sort of. That game is Learn to Fly Idle.
Learn to Fly Idle has the player controlling a penguin that is shooting a canon at various immobile enemies to collect money and further upgrade its canon. My main reason for picking this game is because it has an autofire feature that can be upgraded to give faster attacks. This allowed me to keep multiple tabs open on my computer and take care of other work while I played (I use this term loosely) the game.
In Learn to Fly Idle, there are four main aspects of the canon that can be upgraded. The aspects are launching power, damage, number of shots and autofire speed. Players also collect research points for over time and for completing certain achievements. These points can be used to change damage, shot speed, the cost of upgrades, how fast research points are generated and distance between the canon and targets.
Players who actually try to play Learn to Fly Idle without the autofire feature are going to find themselves bored out of their minds. The game really isn’t fit to be played as something that keeps a person’s undivided attention. This makes it a pretty good example of a Time Waster. In one regard, paying full attention to this game is a waste of time, but at the same time, it’s also a good way to kill time while working.

Learn to Fly has really simple graphics. The only thing that moves are the bullets and canon. All of the enemies don’t move and only blink red when damaged. I can’t say too much about the graphics because I didn’t pay much attention to them between moving from tab to tab. Audio in Learn to Fly Idle is limited to background music. There are nine different tracks to choose from and people are likely to find one they will enjoy. There aren’t any other sounds in the game. No noises for dying enemies or the canon being fired are in the game.
Overall, Learn to Fly Idle is a unique Time Waster. It isn’t a game that I can recommend just sitting down and playing, yet it’s perfect to have sitting in the background while at work or school. The gameplay isn’t really involved and there isn’t much of a sense of accomplishment for beating the game. It also has really limited graphics and audio.
